Suicide Bomber Hits Indonesian mosque, wounds 26

A suicide bomber jumping itself in an Indonesian mosque Friday, injuring 26 people in the first attack of activists against a mosque in the predominantly Muslim country, said responsible.

The attack occurred at prayer in a police compound in the city of Cirebon in West Java, and most of the victims were officers.

They were rushed into hospital with wounds to the arms, legs and the torso, said Yeni Rahmawati, a spokesman for the hospital.

Indonesia, a nation secular, predominantly Muslim $ 237 million, has been hit by a string of terrorist attacks linked to al-Qaida since the attacks in 2002 on two nightclubs crowded Bali.

Many of 260 people were killed in these attacks were foreign tourists.

Last year, however, activists seeking to carve out an Islamic State have said that moderate leaders and the country's security forces would be their main targets. They attacked several positions of police since then, but never a mosque.

Chief of West Java, major-general Suparni Parto police, said El-Shinta radio that the body deformation of the suicide bombing was found at the scene.

The man apparently was a suicide vest under his black Islamic robes and sit amongst dozens of faithful when he left for the bomb, said Agus Riyanto, a police spokesman. The Bombardier shouted "God is great", as he detonated his device, authorities said.

While activists in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq have not hesitated to attack mosques where their enemies are met, this represents a first for the Indonesia.

"It is really worrying," said Mardigu Wawiek Prasantyo, an intelligence analyst, noting that the bombing during Friday prayers points to a "hardening of the militants."

Most of the Indonesia 210 million Muslims are moderate with no tolerance for violence.
